Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 in Tupelo,
Mississippi; † August 16 1977 in Memphis, Tennessee), often called
simply "Elvis", was an American singer, musician and actor. He
is considered as one of the most successful representatives of rock and
pop culture of the 20th Century. Because of his success and his charisma,
he is also known as "King of Rock 'n' Roll" or simply referred
to as the "King". Presley has sold over one billion records, and
is the world's most successful solo artist.
Elvis Presley was 14-times nominated for a Grammy, which he won three
times by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Presley is
the only artist in five Rock and Roll Halls of Fames. Rock 'n' roll,
rockabilly, country, blues and gospel.
In the American Billboard charts Presley was until 1977, with 15
different number-one albums, and 16 number-one-Extended Plays.
He is the only musician in the U.S. chart history with number-one hits,
both in billboard pop, Country, Rhythm & Blues, and Adult
Contemporary charts. To date he is still on the list of billboards of the
500 most successful artists from 1955 to the present.
Elvis Presley began his career in 1954 as one of the first musicians of
the rockabilly movement, a fusion of "white" country and
"black" Rhythm & Blues. His breakthrough came in 1956, when
he was the controversial figure to identify the rock 'n' roll movement. He
made a sensation with his stage performances, and a very moving body in a
time when it still was not one of the standard repertoire of live
entertainers. Presley's trademark was his striking, nearly three octaves
comprehensive voice and be more innovative, emotionally charged vocal
style, with which he was successful in such diverse genres such as
rock, pop, country, gospel and blues. Between 1956 and 1972, Elvis
Presley starred in 31 feature films and two concert documentaries.
