Billy Talent
is an alternative rock band from Mississauga, Canada.
Lead
singer Benjamin Kowalewicz (born December 16, 1975 in Montreal)
studied at the Our Lady of Mount Caramel Secondary School, and met
there Jonathan Gallant (born July 23, 1975), with whom he played in
the band To Each His Own.
At a band competition they met band members that played at that
time in various bands and decided to play together in the future. The
new band was called Pezz and the music was at that time progressive
rock. Besides a few local gigs, they took in 1998 the album Watoosh! .
1999, a reorientation towards alternative rock, and due to
disagreements with an eponymous band the name was changed to
"Billy Talent", a character from the movie Hard Core Logo.
With the new image and style they aroused interest in Toronto's
largest radio rock show and the producer gave them a record deal with
Warner Records.
