Forming a band

Most people start playing with friends or join a local band. The personal notices page in a local paper or magazine is a good place to look for bands who want a musician with your skills or to advertise for a band to play in; or try the bulletin board of a community centre or music shop. On the internet you have "Craiglist" or "Kijiji" to advertise yourself.

Auditions

Any musician wanting to join a band can expect to be given a try-out, or audition. Here are some of the things people look put for to see whether someone is suitable.

  • The ability to pick up tunes easily.

  • A good sense of rhythm.

  • Some original material to contribute.

  • A personality that will fit in with the rest of the band.

Before you audition someone, invite them to meet the other band members. You could give them a tape to listen to of the sort of music you like to play, to see if it suits their style too. When auditioning, ask them to join in whatever you are playing to get an idea of their musical ability.
