George Benson (born March 22, 1943 in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is an American jazz and fusion guitarist and
singer.
Benson began his musical career at an early age of eight, when he
performed in nightclubs as a singer. In 1960 he formed a rock band where
he played guitar and sang. By 1964 he made with "Brother" Jack
McDuff his first recording. (The New Boss Guitar).
Influenced by Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery, particularly in the
mid-1960s he came to jazz. He played with such greats as Miles Davis
(Album: Miles In The Sky) or as a sideman for Lou Donaldson and became one
of the most acclaimed jazz guitarists in the world. The early 1970s, he
recorded a number of respected boards with strong radio influence for
Creed Taylor's CTI label, before 1976, Warner Brothers moved, and ended up
with the vocal track "This Masquerade"from the album
"Breezin '". Later in his career, he published a number of often
formulaic and shallow jazz-pop records, that he tried to build on this
commercial success. He also made a success in 1979 with the song "On
Broadway" in the movie to 'All That Jazz ".
Benson is also seen again and again as a virtuoso jazz guitarist
appearance, he is one of the world's finest.
In 2009 he received the NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship.
