The American rock band Grateful Dead was
founded in 1965, in San Francisco from front man Jerry Garcia, who
occupied an important role in the U.S. music scene, and counterculture.
Grateful Dead was known as one of the first bands of the psychedelic
rock and jam bands. The focus of their later music was in country and folk
rock, which they combined with other music genres.
Continuous band members were Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and Bill
Kreutzmann. In particular, the position of the Keyboard was unstable and
was occupied in the thirty years of band history from six different
musicians. After the death of band leader Garcia, the band plays under the
name The Dead. They are still active, and touring at irregular intervals
in the United States.
