Gretsch guitars of the '50s rank as some of the most beautiful
electrics ever made-and the company knew it. Where other manufacturers stressed
playing features and star endorsements, the Fred Gretsch company boasted that
their guitars were available in a wider range of colours than any of their
competitors! Like American cars of the same era, Gretsches were colourful, sexy,
and laden with gadgets, with an impracticality that is part of their charm. The
Gretsch 6120, or Chet Atkins, ranks for many as the company's finest instrument,
an amber and gold dream of a guitar that became an icon in the hands of Eddie
Cochran or Duane Eddy. Fans of the instrument
often comment that no two Gretsches ever sound alike, all the same, Gretsch
guitars have a distinct warm but twangy sound, radically different from Gibsons
or Fenders of the same era. At a time when modern guitar design appears more and
more homogenized, these guitars are an ideal antidote.
