The Kingston Trio

Year formed: 1957 (disbanded 1967)

Band members: Bob Shane (born in 1934), Nick Reynolds (born in 1933), Bob Guard (1934 - 1991)

Instruments/roles: guitars, ukulele, vocals, composers

Profile: The Kingston Trio had a huge hit with their first song, "Tom Dooley". In a few weeks, they went from being performers in small bars to a band with a million/copy hit song. They followed up with several other hits, but serious folk fans considered them a pop act, rather than a traditional folk band. However, other folk bands benefited from their success and popularity.
