| Pink (born September 8, 1979 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania,
her real name is Alecia Beth Moore), often stylized as P!nk is an
American singer and songwriter.
The name Pink is based on several personal experiences from childhood
and teenage years: When she visited a summer camp as an 8-year-old, a boy
exposed her, and to her shameful blushing, he commented loudly: "Look
at that pink girl!". Years later, she saw the movie Reservoir
Dogs with friends. The figure of "Mr. Pink "brought back the
memory of the childhood experience and she was then called
"Pink" by her friends. Also a boyfriend at the time, made a
comment about the color of her genitals, she then decided to adopt this
name for herself.
The desire to make music was already in Pink's childhood. Because she
suffered as a little girl with severe asthma, she was taking singing, and
dancing lessons to improve her breathing technique. Over the years, her
vocal skills developed through the voice training so well that she became
a member in a church gospel choir. From her father, she often sang songs
and accompanying him on guitar, she also learned to play this instrument.
In her high school years she attended first performances with the group
"Middle Ground", which was only briefly. More success came with
one of her regular trips to the Clubs of Philadelphia, where a DJ paid
attention, to the then 13-year-old. He hired her first as a dancer and
then as a background singer for his hip-hop group "Schoolz Of
Thought". A year later she was allowed to perform once a week at Club
Fever, where she presented her first original songs.
In the conviction that she is more of a "Rock Star", Pink
went with 16 to Atlanta and founded with two other girls, the R & B
group "Choice" (Atlanta was at the time, by artists like OutKast,
Usher, and TLC a center of the U.S. music industry). A demo tape of their
song "Key To My Heart" came to LA Reid, who took the trio on his
label, LaFace Records contract, "Key To My Heart" was released
in 1996 on the soundtrack to the movie Kazaam. Choice broke up in 1998,
due to musical differences.
