Having an Image
Many things can contribute to your band's
visual impact, or image:
-
your musical style
-
clothes
-
the name of your band
-
your stage lay-out and lighting ....etc.
You don't have to consciously develop an image.
The band's image will be most successful if it grows out of the music you play
and reflects your real personalities. An image that is not natural is easily
seen through.
Tips for getting started
-
Play at friends parties
-
Talk to musicians. At gigs, ask the band how
they got started.
-
Ask in libraries or arts centres for lists of
clubs and events.
-
Find out what music clubs specialize in and
ask if they would like you to play. Be ready to submit a demo tape.
-
Prepare a few songs for audition that show
your range and style.
-
Make a video and post it at
"youtube", or send it to webmaster@proguitar.com,
we are more than happy to help out new bands and help you promote your music
for free by posting it on our site.
Preparing for a gig
Having booked a venue, rent a PA if necessary.
To avoid problems of distortion, it should be powerful enough for you not to
have to run it at full capacity. Plan transportation to the gig in advance. You
may need a small van to carry all your gear.
|
Fees
Play for a fee, however small, if you can
or you will undermine the value of your performance. At first, you may
have to pay for the venue and take the money from ticket sales as payment. |
Tickets
Make tickets and number them so you know
how many sell. Price them in line with other bands in your area. Ask music
shops if they will sell some for you and get a friend to sell them at the
venue. A lot of money will be needed, to give change. |
Publicity
To get as large an audience as possible,
advertise your gig in advance. Print our own posters, detailing information such
as:
-
Venue and date
-
Entrance fee
-
Where to buy tickets
If you can, display posters in record shops and
venues where music similar to yours is played, Ask friends to display them, too.
Try to get into venues listings in magazines, by contacting the listings editor.
Someone from the magazine may be sent to review the gig if you send them a
couple of free tickets. Try posting them on the net like
"craiglist" or "kijiji" .
But you are also very welcome to send it here
to webmaster@proguitar and we will post
it here on our site.
